Daniel Fells Close With Patriots – Did Rams Miss Out?

UPDATE: Fells left New England without signing a contract even though he was reported to be “close” to a contract with New England.

The Rams had Daniel Fells on their squad for two years and this off-season had his rights as a restrictive free agent, but they decided not offer him a tender, instead letting him walk.  He was signed by the always-savvy Patriots.  When the Patriots sign one of your team’s players, it always presents a double-take because it makes you think that your made a mistake by giving up on a player the Patriots had interest in.  That is certainly not always the case as the Pats have made their share of mistakes.  And in this case the Pats always are hungry for new and different tight ends.

Daniel Fells was the Rams best tight end in 2009, but that is not saying much.  Randy McMichael was over the hill and Billy Bajema was a blocking tight end.  Fells is certainly not much of a blocker, so he can only be used in certain passing situations.  Fells is still athletic and raw, but obviously the Rams wanted to go in a completely different direction with their tight end position.

GM Billy Devaney found Daniel Fells off the trash pile of available players from other squads and he acquitted himself great in St. Louis for such a low profile signing.  But, the Rams need an upgrade at tight end and Devaney can find another low-profile tight end if he needs to fill a spot on the roster in the fall.

Dan – you are right. I thought it was a done deal in NE, but it looks like the Rams have put themselves back in the picture. New post on it coming soon.
