Free Agent Fever – Fullbacks

Last week we finished looking at available QBs; now it’s time for the Fullbacks.  There are only 5 unrestricted free agents currently going into the 2010 season.  Here is their info:

1 Dan Kreider – Dan was picked up as an unsigned free agent by Pittsburg in 2000.  He moved up from the practice squad to the active roster by Oct that year.  Maintaining the starting role he even made a key contribution to the Steelers Super Bowl winning effort that year.  He played for Pittsburg for 8 years and never played less than 10 games in a season.  Dan lost his starting role in 2007 and later in the season incurred a season ending knee injury.  In 2008 he was signed to the Rams and became their #1 FB.  He played 11 games before being released.  (I’m not sure why… no injury is listed.).  In 2009 he played 4 games with no starts for the Cardinals.

2 Justin Griffith – Justin was drafted by the Falcons in 2003 and played there for 4 years.  During those years he played the entire season 3 times and had at least 11 starts per year.  In 2007 he moved to the Raiders where he again played in all 16 games and started 11.  In 2008 he stayed with the Raiders, but his playing time was greatly reduced.  2009 brought Justin to Seattle and another productive season (he played in 12 games).  Justin’s stats have never been impressive, but he has been durable and competitive almost his entire NFL career.

3 Kyle Eckel – Eckel was undrafted in 2005, but was picked up by the Patriots.  That same year the Patriots turned him right over to the Dolphins.  On the Dolphins he received a special roster status due to his commitment to the military (Navy).  But, when he returned to the Dolphins in 2006, he was not activated.  In 2007 the Dolphins traded him back to the Patriots where he finally saw his first playing time.  In 2007 Kyle played in 12 games.  In 2008 he split the season between the Patriots and the Eagles with limited playing time.  2009 saw him with the Saints, but again he made few visits to the playing field.

4 Terrelle Smith – Smith was drafted by the NOR Saints in 2000.  From 2000-2008 he played for 3 teams (Saints, Browns, and Cardinals) and never played less than 14 games per year.  In 2009 he moved to Detroit where he only played in 2 games (there were no injuries reported so I’m not sure why there was a decrease in playing time).  Smith’s stats have never been impressive, but he has been durable and competitive almost his entire NFL career (similar to Griffith).

5 Tony Richardson – Richardson was undrafted in 1994, but was picked up by Dallas.  Dallas traded him to Kansas City in 1995 and by 1996 he had worked himself into a starting role.  Richardson’s best statistical year was in 2000 when he accumulated 1,165 yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving).  He played for Kansas City 11 years and was selected to 2 Pro Bowls.  He was picked up in 2006 by Minnesota and again made the Pro bowl with them in 2007.  2008-2009 saw him playing for the Jets where he had 7 starts and played in a total of 25 games.  Richardson has had a very successful 15 career. He is 38 years old.

Of the 5 available FBs I like two:  Justin Griffith and Terrelle Smith.  Both players are seasoned veterans who have proven them selves to be durable and competitive.  And unlike Richardson, I think both of them are also young enough to continue to perform at a high level.

I look forward to your comments.  Next: Running Backs!
