Free Agent Fever – Part 3

…Of the ten QBs we have looked at so far (AJ Feeley, Brian St Pierre, Chad Pennington, Charlie Batch, Chris Redman, Daunte Culpepper, David Carr, J.P. Losman, Jeff Garcia, Josh McCown), I see several that are interesting to me.  Of course I like a healthy Chad Pennington and a younger Jeff Garcia, but I don’t see that happening (although I am not totally opposed to Garcia for a year… he could be a good mentor for his immediate replacement).  I like Carr and Batch as short termers (2 years) and I think with the right coaching and team JP Losman could also be a short term option (2-3+ years).

Before I move on to the remaining QBs available in free agency, I’d like to make a couple of comments:

1)      Everything I have said or am going to say about these players is from the outside looking in.  I read stats, I read articles, I hear interviews, and have seen some of the players on TV.  I don’t know them or the people they work with/for.  When I say someone is not a winner or I would not choose them to play for me it is a statement based upon some public stats.  Again, I don’t know them, how hard they have worked, how much they have sacrificed or what they dream to become.  No matter what my commentary I wish them stupefying and extreme success.

2)      As I have analyzed the 14 QBs entering free agency, I find myself looking at mostly the same criteria to determine if I would pick them to join ‘my team’.   So, going forward I will be changing the format of my article to reflect this.  (There might be other slight changes as I move to different positions.

The rest of the QBs are after the jump!

Kyle Boller  (PS Appear = Post Season Appearances, Last PB = Last Pro Bowl)

Age Drafted By Draft Yr # Teams Yrs Pro Win Yrs Win % PS Appear Pro Bowls Last PB
29 Ravens 2003 2 7 1 47% 0 0 NA

Comments: Occasional high performance, but unable to maintain.

Mark Brunell

Age Drafted By Draft Yr # Teams Yrs Pro Win Yrs Win % PS Appear Pro Bowls Last PB
39 Packers 1993 4 16 5 52% 3 3 1999

Comments:  Brunell was phenomenal from 1996-1999, but his stats have not been close to that ever since.

Patrick Ramsey

Age Drafted By Draft Yr # Teams Yrs Pro Win Yrs Win % PS Appear Pro Bowls Last PB
31 Redskins 2002 4 8 0 42% 0 0 NA

Comments: Ramsey has never been successful in the NFL.

Rex Grossman

Age Drafted By Draft Yr # Teams Yrs Pro Win Yrs Win % PS Appear Pro Bowls Last PB
30 Bears 2003 2 7 1 61% 2 0 NA

Comments: High performance in 2006, but he is inconsistent and prone to turnovers.

Out of the last 4 QBs, only Grossman interests me.   He has made a lot of the types of mistaken that can relegate a player to the bench.  However, he has played the game at the highest level (Bears QB in Super Bowl 41) and he is still young enough to improve on his game.  Rex Grossman as the next Ram’s starting QB?  What do you think Ram’s fans?

Next we will analyze the free agent running backs and fullbacks.  Hello LT and B Westbrook.   Finally, Happy Birthday Jeff Garcia!  He turned 40 yesterday.
