Rams and Bucs Trade Rumors

The rumors never stop swirling this time of the year and right now they are stronger than ever with an epic rumor involving our St. Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Bucs.

The Rams hold the 1st overall selection and the Bucs hold the 3rd overall selection and are reported to covet Ndamukong Suh, who will be selected no higher than 2nd overall to the Lions.    But, what would the Rams get out of a trade like this?  Well, the Bucs have 2 second round picks, including the 3rd pick in the second round and the 3rd pick in the 3rd round.  The Rams would love to have two (or three) picks in the stacked 2nd round, but according to the report the Bucs have something else the Rams need: quarterbacks.

The Bucs selected Josh Freeman in the middle of the 1st round in 2009 and have another good, young quarterback in Josh Johnson.  (Perhaps they just want to eliminate any “Josh!” confusions.)  The Rams are reportedly very high on Johnson and would accept the 3rd round pick, Johnson and the 3rd overall selection for their first overall selection.  If this is the offer the Rams were offered from the Tampa Bay Bucs, there is no reason they should not accept it.  That is an incredible deal that will get the Rams their young veteran playcaller with starting experience.  He has a very high ceiling as a passer and still has the raw athleticism to count as his own threat with his legs.

The dangerous part of this report is the fact that the Rams are trying to get Michael Vick first and foremost and the trade with Tampa Bay would just be the “plan B”.  This is a terrible idea.  Josh Johnson has a much higher upside as a passer than Vick.  People who criticize the Rams like to say that this is a quarterback driven league, but that’s not true, it is a PASSING driven league.  If the Rams have a quarterback who is not a good passer, then they are just as bad off as they were before.

There is a lot to this rumor that we will be covering over the next few days, but the Rams could be even more influential at the 3rd overall selection if one of the teams in the top 10 needs to trade up for either Bradford or Clausen.  The Rams would be in a great position to trade down again and get even more picks.

I love draft season!
