Some reports surfaced over the weekend that Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo has a so-called “out clause” in his contract allowing him to leave the Rams if the Rams get a new owner. Being that the Rams just signed an agreement to bring on a new owner in the next two months, this is a relevant story. Let me get this out there right away, just like Bernie Miklasz, I don’t think that Coach Spagnuolo will leave the Rams.
Coach Spagnuolo has an opportunity few coaches have as he is building the Rams from the ground up exactly the way he wants to build a football team. He’s working with his friend, Billy Devaney and by all accounts he has a great working relationship with Devaney. Together they have brought in their type of players and eliminated over-priced veterans to provided maximum stability and flexibility going forward. The Rams are in a great position going forward and have the 1st pick in every round in a deep draft in 2010. This is Coach Spags’s time to show why he was brought to St. Louis. Everything that happened in 2009 should be a preamble to Spagnuolo’s work with the Rams.
I understand why Spagnuolo negotiated an out clause with all the uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the Rams, but it wouldn’t make sense for him to use it now.

I think it was for his protection in a worst case scenario in the event a new owner would begin to dismantle, hinder everyday operations or just generally interfere with his ability to get the job done. He has a excellent opportunity, as you say, to help build a team from the ground up.
