Rams Sold To Shahid Khan

UPDATE: Here is Khad’s release about the Rams.

“I recently signed an agreement with respect to the purchase of the St. Louis Rams,” Khan said. “The proposed transaction is subject to approval by the National Football League and its owners. To that end, I am excited to begin the approval process and will, in accordance with league policy, proceed on a confidential basis and refrain from public comment.  As a long time Rams fan and supporter of the City of St. Louis, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be considered by the NFL and am extremely grateful for the trust placed in me by Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez.”

The Rams ownership group of Rosenbloom and Rodriquez have entered into an agreement to sell the Rams to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan.  The move will still be pending for over 6 weeks as the NFL owners would have to approve the sale to Khan.

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch got the scoop late last night and the full article is posted on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website.

Khan lives in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois which is just over 3 hours from St. Louis.  And Bernie drops the best news for St. Louis Rams fans in the article.

Multiple league sources describe Khan as an enthusiastic Rams fan who has attended home games at the Edward Jones Dome. League sources say Khan is committed to keeping the team in St. Louis — and that was an important consideration to Rosenbloom and Rodriguez in making their decision to sell to him.
The Rams will probably be able to vacate their lease agreement after the 2014 season, but sources say Khan is willing to work with local leaders in an effort to assure the team’s long-term future in St. Louis. A source noted Khan’s deep and stable roots in central Illinois as a sign that he wants to own an NFL franchise in St. Louis — and in no other market.
Moreover, Khan is said to have special feelings for St. Louis because he arrived in St. Louis early in his life when his parents moved to the United States from Pakistan.

That is the best possible result for St. Louis, even if Dave Checketts purchased the team.  A St. Louis Rams fan buys the Rams is the best case scenario and Khan is committed to keeping the Rams in St. Louis.

It is unclear if Stan Kroenke will want to sell his 40% stake in the Rams, but by all accounts Khan would have the money to purchase that portion if he needed to.

Additionally, Khan will be the first minority owner in the NFL if the sale goes through.

That is good news for Rams fans in St. Louis and for the stability of the franchise. I think having a good stable owner would be key to making the moves necessary to move forward and be agressive enough to come back to prominence.

Case in point. The Rams have become a non-entity in my area (western Canada) you cannot buy any Rams merchandise from any outlet in Canada, except for a few online stores.

Five years ago that was not the case. It is a sign of just how much work there is to do to rebuild the franchise from the ground up.
