It Is Just Sad

When trying to figure out some way to sum up my feelings on the whole realm of Steven Jackson news that broke yesterday, it only just makes me sad.  I am sad, first and foremost for our star player, Steven Jackson, without whom the Rams would not have a win in 2009.  He is more than the star of the Rams, he is the unquestioned team leader and he is the player on which the franchise will rebuild.  When the foundation is faltered, the whole structure falls apart.

We do not know much about these allegations, but the police report is very specific but filed just this week, 10 months after the alleged incident.  Additionally, reports have Jackson and Supriya Harris, the mother of his child, in a disagreement over child support.

This situation takes shades of gray to a whole new level.  In fact, there is very little black and white and it is all shades of gray.  This is a classic case of he said/she said.  It will be Jackson’s word against Harris’s.

More after the jump.

In one side of the coin, Jackson is possibly a man who has committed domestic violence repeatedly and once hurled the mother of his child who was nine months pregnant against a wall and battered her.  He then told her to lie about her injuries to the hospital.

In one middle case, Jackson is possibly a deadbeat dad who hasn’t paid child support for his son that was born in March of 2009.

Similar to the above case, Jackson could be paying child support, but much less than the amount that Harris believes that she deserves.

Also, it is possible that Harris is fabricating these charges (as Jackson alleges) for her own gain, possibly through financial means attempting to drag Jackson through the mud.

As is always the case with the cases of he said/she said, the truth is somewhere in the middle of the allegations.

It is hard to think that a man that Rams fans have cheered on for years is a wife beater, but we know nothing of what any player does when they leave the field of play.  We do not know who is a great family man, who is the ultimate playboy and which players act like Jackson is alleged to have acted towards his very pregnant girlfriend.

We demand perfection with unrelenting strength and aggression from our anonymous heroes on the field, but to what end off the field.

No one comes out looking good from all of this regardless of what happens, least of all Rams fans who have hoped for 3 years for something to build on, only to have it crumble in their hands again and again.  It is all just sad for the football team, but more for the man and the woman and the child they share regardless of how the whole thing gets resolved.
