Why Did Rams Turn Down Senior Bowl Coaching Invite?

The invitation to coach in the Senior Bowl is extended by the NFL to the team in each conference with the worst record provided they are not going through a coaching change.  The Rams had the worst record in the NFL and were offered the chance to coach a team in the Senior Bowl and declined.  The Detroit Lions were the next in line and accepted the invitation.  In the AFC, the Miami Dolphins are coaching the other squad.  The Dolphins were 7-9, so the Chiefs, Browns, Raiders and Jaguars all said no to coaching a squad in the Senior Bowl.

Every coaching staff that leads one of the teams in the Senior Bowl says how much value they get out of the process and how they are able to better know the players before they draft them.  Inevitably, the team will draft someone from their Senior Bowl team and say how much it benefited their evaluation procedures.  First and foremost, this is a self-selecting population of coaches.  No one is forced to coach the Senior Bowl and no one comes out and says that it was a waste of time.  Any coach that works a Senior Bowl squad has accepted the invite and has agreed to go.

Kevin Demoff said that the Rams declined because the amount of work it would take to coach the team was not worth the benefits.  The Rams will still be able to talk to all the prospects at the Senior Bowl as much as they want.  There are no time restrictions like the combine.  The Rams will not be limited in their contact with the seniors.

The Rams have a lot of needs to fill through free agency, underclassmen and seniors in the draft and undrafted free agents.  It does not look like a mistake to forgo coaching the Senior Bowl squad even though there are tons of stories of coaches being excited to coach the college seniors.  Additionally, many evaluators have said that the Senior Bowl will not change the grade you already have on a player significantly.  Three or four years of tape will not be undone by one bad or good week.
