Who To Keep: S

With the Rams season over, it is time to think about who should be back next year at every position.  Let’s take a look through player by player. Next up are the safeties.

James Butler – Butler had a tough season.  He was one of the only players in the defensive backfield to escape the injury bug.  Same as Atogwe, because of the struggles of the Rams front 7, he found himself too often having to make tackles on running backs down the field.  He is a solid player and will improve with the defense.

OJ Atogwe – Atogwe is one of the leaders of the Rams defense and the Rams should bring him back in 2010 after signing him to a franchise tender in 2009.  He’s not a top 5 safety, but he is a ball hawk and always finds himself around the ball.  He is at his best when a linebacker stands up the running back and he can strip the football.  He will benefit from improved defensive play around him.

Rest of the safeties are after the jump.

Craig Dahl – We got to see a lot of Dahl in 2009 because of Atogwe’s injury.  He was out of his depth at free safety and would be much better playing strong safety.  However, he filled in admirably.  Dahl is a great tackler, superb special teams player and great against the run.  He is very limited covering wide receivers or athletic tight ends down the field and if he is on the field, the Rams should do their best to keep him out of those situations.

Eric Bassey – Bassey was lost for the year during training camp and we don’t know much about him.  Should be in play for 4th safety in 2010.

David Roach – David Roach was a practice squad player and then a backup and special teams player for the Rams in 2009.  If he is going to make the roster in 2010, he will have to earn it on special teams.

Clinton Hart – Hart was signed midseason as veteran depth after OJ Atogwe went to IR.  The Rams shouldn’t need Hart back in 2010.
