Who To Keep: QB

With the Rams season over, it is time to think about who should be back next year at every position.  Let’s take a look through player by player. First, we will start off with the quarterbacks.

Marc Bulger – Bulger is due a lot of money next season if he is on the roster and a little bit less if he is not on the roster.  It has now become time for the Rams to separate themselves from Marc and let him find a new beginning with another organization.  The Rams won’t have the weapons to make Bulger successful and he probably needs a year or two as a backup to get fully healthy again.  The Rams need to start anew at QB and eat the cap charge for cutting Bulger whether it is an uncapped season or not.

Kyle Boller – Boller was signed as a backup quarterback, but was pressed into duty far too often and his considerable weaknesses were readily apparent.  I don’t think the Rams would even entrust their backup quarterback situation to Boller in 2010 after his terrible season in 2009 of overthrows, sacks, injuries and benchings.

Keith Null -Null was pressed into duty after Kyle Boller was injured and then contracted the swine flu.  He only took the #1 team snaps in practice for the last month and is sorely in need of experience.  He has a strong arm, but doesn’t always use it at the right times.  He got shaken up in the regular season finale, but looks to be a strong bet to be on the roster as a 3rd QB in 2010.

Mike Reilly – Reilly was signed off Green Bay’s practice squad near the end of the season, but was signed to a 2 year contract, so will be in camp with the Rams in 2010.  He had glowing scouting reports when he came out of college, but is just finishing up his rookie season like Null.  Reilly should challenge Null for the 3rd QB spot in 2010.

Rams could be in the market for 2 QBs this offseason, a starting QB and a backup.
