Rams Have First Pick, Finally

For 2 seasons in a row, the Rams have been runners-up in the NFL draft, picking second, first behind Miami and then Detroit.  But, this season, the Rams pulled out all the stops and got that number 1 pick.  The first pick has a significant number of advantages over the second pick.  First of all, the Rams now have the ability to start negotiating with any prospect they would like.  No other pick has that sort of advantage.  Even when the first pick is signed, the second pick cannot start negotiating.  And the other obvious advantage of the first pick is that the Rams can pick any player they want, without having to worry about the whims of the other team ahead of them.  This year is shaping up as a great year to have the number 1 pick so far because there is a player that is considered the best draft prospect in the nation.  His name is Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle, Nebraska.

Should the Rams take Suh?

There will be plenty of time for that debate over the coming 4 months, but right now Suh is the best player at a need position for the Rams.

A much smaller advantage is that the Rams pick in the second round, 32 overall, is practically a late 1st round pick and the Rams will have the ability to pick a highly touted player with their second pick as well.
