Bernie Hits the Nail on the Head

9. There’s lots of time to discuss the particulars of the 2010 NFL Draft, but I’m already tired of hearing peeps say that the Rams need to take a QB or a WR with the No. 1 overall pick in order to do something about the league’s worst offense. The Rams offense is pitiful. But that doesn’t mean you reach for a QB or WR if the guy is NOT the best player in the draft. This team needs help across the board. You have to take the best player. And if the best player is a defensive tackle, then you take him. Besides, have you folks watched the Rams defense this season? Did I miss something? I didn’t realize the Rams were close to putting replications of the 1985 Chicago Bears or 2000 Baltimore Ravens defense on the field. Only two teams had fewer sacks (25) than the Rams this season; that was the third-lowest total for the franchise since sacks became an official stat in 1969. The Rams defense finished 31st among 32 NFL teams in passer rating against, were next to last in interceptions, were 29th in allowing third-down conversions, were 27th in rushing yards allowed, gave up the most rushing TDs (24), were 29th in yards allowed per game, were 31st in points allowed.  The No. 1 overall pick is crucial, yes. But the Rams will have eight other picks including real premium selections in rounds two, three and four. They surely can address the offense in this draft.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz in today’s blog post. I couldn’t agree more.
