The Goggles, They Do Nothing!

St. Louis area Rams fans are a dedicated bunch as they don their goggles every week and week, “Ze Goggles Ze Do Nothing!” (click on the link for the internet meme reference).  But Rams fans continue to tune in as the Rams continue to lose.  Is it like a car crash and no matter what happens, Rams fans cannot look away?  It is a testament to the power of the NFL?

The Post-Dispatch’s Dan Caesar and his ominous photo cover the Rams successes in the local TV market even while they have not had much success on the field.

Last week, the Rams were blacked out on local TV and the rating for the Arizona – Tennessee game was 15.5, but the Rams are drawing an average of 16.8 this season, which is up 1 point from last season.  So, it looks like the NFL has some draw with local NFL fans, but more people tune in for Rams games than regular NFL games.

St. Louis is a baseball town and they are second in the nation for percentage of homes that tune to the local baseball teams games, however, that number is dwarfed by the Rams numbers. From Caesar:

To put that in perspective — … no telecast of a Cardinals regular-season baseball game this year, … matched that [16.8 average viewer rating for Rams games] figure. And only five of those ballgames beat the worst Rams rating, 14.6.

However, obviously, the Rams ratings have dropped off since they were at their peak in the 1999-2003 era.  But, the numbers haven’t dropped off as steeply as the Rams performance.

Thus while its winning percentage has dropped more than 63 percent, viewership has fallen only 40 percent. “Everything is relevant,” Koch said. “The Rams still (often) are the No. 1-rated show in St. Louis each week, and in this age of DVDs and mobile phones and everything else competing for viewers, they still draw a great number” despite the team’s woeful record.

So keep up the good work local St. Louis Rams fans.  Unfortunately, your protective goggles will continue to do nothing to protect you from the woeful play of the Rams, but keep watching!
