Jason Smith’s Brain

Jason Smith was inactive for last week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, but that did not keep him from making the news.  He was taken to the hospital after the game suffering headaches and feeling sick.  He passed the precautionary tests, but has yet to pass a baseline test, which would allow him to take more tests before being allowed back in the lineup.  However, Smith seemed to be in a good mood despite the possibility of missing a 2nd straight game:

“Like in my situation, what good is 310 pounds of twisted steel without a head? [I’m] 310 pounds of twisted steel, sex appeal, you know.”

I would love to have Jason Smith back in the game.  He has already shown that he is the Rams best tackle in his last two games.  He is only improving and his upside is immense.  He is only going to get better by playing and learning new moves to use on defensive ends.

However, on the other end of things, this is the brain of our left tackle for the next 10+ seasons.  We should not rush him back only to suffer more damage in an otherwise lost season.  Concussions and brain injuries are not something to be trifled about and have gained considerably more prominence in the NFL this season.

Considering Jason Smith couldn’t even be in a (semi-) loud and bright stadium without having to be taken to the hospital just a few days ago, he shouldn’t play this week.   Instead, he should let his brain heal and come back when he is ready and will be able to do more good for the Rams than long-term harm to his body.
