Jason Smith Should Be At LT

The Rams selected tackle Jason Smith number 2 overall in the 2009 NFL draft to be their left tackle of the future for the next 10-12 years.  But, Jason Smith has started this season on the right side before getting hurt and has bizarrely been in a 3 tackle rotation with Adam Goldberg and Alex Barron.  At this point, Barron is better than Smith and Goldberg is probably slightly better.  However, if Jason Smith is going to be playing left tackle for the Rams in the future, he should be learning left tackle right now for the Rams.  Barron quite possibly could be leaving the Rams after the season and Goldberg is in the last year of his contract next year.  Goldberg is a very valuable and versitle backup and a great player to have on the roster, but he should not be starting over Jason Smith.

Smith is going to have a lot of plays in which he is beaten by players like he was beat by Dwight Freeney, but he won’t learn how to control the Dwight Freeneys of the world on the sideline.

Mike Sando of ESPN has the same thought.

The Rams drafted Smith to be their left tackle of the future. Why not play him there now? Why not play him there from the beginning of the season?
Smith faced an adjustment to the NFL game either way. Playing him at right tackle to this point will force him to make another adjustment later.
The Rams are seven games into a lost season. If they can’t let Smith take his lumps at left tackle now, when is the right time?
I’m open to possible explanations for leaving Smith on the right side this season. None immediately make sense to me.
