Rams v. Colts: Preview to A Beatdown

Peyton Manning and the Colts have not lost so far in 2009 and the Rams haven’t won in 2009.  That does not bode well for the Rams chances in week 7.  To add to that, the Colts are coming off their bye week and Manning and company have had an extra week to prepare for the Rams.  This could get ugly quickly.  Here’s why.

Colts offense against the Rams defense. The Rams play a blitzing defense which has struggled at times due to inexperience and mistakes.  Peyton Manning makes his living anticipating and dissecting the blitz and the 1 on 1 coverage it leaves behind.  He also makes his living dissecting all other types of defenses as well, but more than any other quarterback, he invites the blitz.  Manning can carve up a defense better than anyone.  Will new starting linebacker Larry Grant be able to stay with tight end Dallas Clark?  Or will the Rams match up Clark with a safety?  The Rams defense will also have to disguise their blitzes well enough to keep Manning from changing to a play to attack that specific blitz.  The defense will also have to force turnovers to have a chance in this game.

The Rams offense against the Colts defense. Other teams have tried a ball control offense against the Colts to try to keep Peyton Manning off the field, but even that hasn’t worked.  The Colts run a cover 2 defense.  Look for the Rams to attempt to attack the seams with tight ends Randy McMichael and Daniel Fells.  The Rams offense has failed to keep the ball and keep the pressure off the Rams defense even against teams with mediocre offenses.  This is even more important against the Colts.  The Rams need to get first downs and keep the defense rested so they are fresh in the fourth quarter.  If the Rams are going to stay in this game, they will have to keep up with the high-scoring Colts.

I know it sounds pessimistic to say on Thursday that the Rams will be getting “beat down” on Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome, but it could get ugly for the Rams.
