It was amazing how Rush's 1 comment was so misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. He simply stated on ESPN that he felt that that the press over-hyped Donovan McNabb's abilities because he was black...in essence implying that the press was guilty of reverse-racism... It wasn't a racial slur anymore than saying that people like Robert Redford because he's good looking (not necessarily because he's a good actor). Now if he had stated that someone was a bad QB or coach because they were black, or that a white guy couldn't jump because he was white, THEN you'd be getting racist. Actually, Rush's comment somewhat was in defense of McNabb...that everyone's expectations about McNabb were overblown by the press so that everyone was disappointed when he was unspectacular, creating unnecessary hatred towards McNabb. Rush never said that McNabb was a bad QB, only that McNabb’s talent was overstated by the press. I’m sure that if the discussion had continued, instead of silence that followed when Rush said “black” (OMG), that Rush would have acknowledged that McNabb was a good QB (just not as good as the press made him out to be).
Ironically, Rush lost his commentator gig, and has been unjustifiably vilified all because of this one honest comment, talk about a lynching…
