Encouraged or Discouraged?

The Rams lost their hard-fought week 2 game 9-7 to drop to 0-2 and extend their losing streak to 12 games across 2 seasons.  Should we be encouraged or discouraged by the game?  Let’s take a look.

Offensive Line – The Rams invested a great deal of money in their offensive line and haven’t yet seen much return on their investment so far in 2009.  The Rams have 2 first round picks and 2 big ticket free agent signees on their offensive line, plus Richie Incognito.  The Redskins do have a good defensive line, but the Rams offensive line should have at least been able to hold their own, but instead Bulger got battered all day.  Discouraged.

Marc Bulger – Bulger probably had the best game of any player on the field for the Rams, he was beaten up, knocked down and kept delivering the passes in the face of the Redskins pressure.  He threw his first TD pass of the year to Laurent Robinson on a nicely weighted fade pattern. Encouraged as long as he can stay in one piece in 2009.

Donnie Avery – Avery was invisible for most of the game against Washington, and Rams fans wish he had stayed invisible as his first catch of the game came in the 4th quarter and he fumbled trying to stretch for the first down when a FG from that position would have put the Rams in the lead.  Avery has a lot of trouble getting open as the #1 receiver in 2008 and 2009, he will have to step up his game.  Discouraged.

Rams defense – The Rams defense was worn down in Week 1 and allowed the Seahawks to pick up some big plays in the second half.  Against the Redskins, the Rams struggled to stop the run, but when the Redskins were faced with 1st and goal, the Rams tightened up and forced 3 short field goals. The Rams also grabbed 1 turnover.  The defense is still a work in progress, but I’m encouraged.
