Rams Lose to Redskins 9-7

So, a hard-fought but flawed loss is better than a complete annihilation, but that doesn’t make it hurt less.

The Rams lost9-7 to the Washington Redskins in FedEx Field in Landover, Md.  The Rams had the ball at their own 2 yard line with 2 minutes left and no timeouts needing a field goal to win the game and went 4 and out.  Previous to that drive, the Rams had driven down to the Washington Redskins 5 yard line, but Donnie Avery fumbled the ball to end the drive.

As evidenced by the 7 points, the Rams offense didn’t get a lot going on Sunday.  The offensive line was continualy handled by the defensive line of the Redskins and Marc Bulger was beaten up over and over again.  Bulger escaped a sack in the 3rd quarter and slid as he got sandwiched by 3 Redskins defenders.  Bulger was down on the field for a few minutes, but was quickly back up.  Bulger was beaten and bruised but he continued to get up and wing passes around the field.

The Rams defense was the definition of the bend but not break philosophy as the Redskins got inside the Rams 10 yard line 4 times and only came away with 3 field goals.  The Redskins offensive line dominated the Rams defensive line and the Redskins were able to run up the middle of the Rams defense.  New Ram LaJuan Ramsey had a few good plays at defensive tackle when he rotated into the game.

Needless to say, sometimes a football game turns on one or two plays and today the Rams didn’t have the plays turn their way.  Donnie Avery tries to do too much on one play and the Rams lose the chance to go up 10-9 or better.

The bottom line is the Rams showed a better effort in week 2 than week 1 and the Redskins were ripe for the picking and they could not get it done.  The Rams always find a way to lose and good teams always find a way to win.  The Rams are attempting to learn how to win again and they still have a ways to go.

Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades, not in the NFL.  The Rams have lost 12 regular season games in a row ahead of their 2009 home opener.
