Football Outsiders have published their preseason DVOA predictions and here are the results for the Rams:
Rank: 12th
Overall DVOA 6.3 % – Good enough for mean wins 8.7 (Seattle is predicted to win the division with mean wins of 9.5)
Offensive DVOA 5.7% – Good enough for 14th. That is a tremendous jump for the Rams offense that had DVOA of -24% That’s a jump of almost 30%!! It looks like improved health and an improved offensive line will go a long way. If the Rams regress to the mean in the red zone, that will help considerably as well.
Defensive DVOA -2.7% – Good enough for 9th. Wow. The Rams were 30th last year with a 23.4% DVOA. That’s another 25% jump. If the Rams continue their turnover theiving ways into the regular season, this might be close.
Special Team DVOA -2.1% – 30th. I’m not sure what goes into the DVOA for special teams, but I consider the Rams specialist to be top drawer. However, the Rams coverage teams have struggled in previous seasons an d had some mental lapses in the preseason. Hopefully, with the smaller rosters, the mental and lane errors will be eliminated.
Schedule: 0.7% – Extremely neutral.
All in all, this is an extremely rosy prediction for the Rams. Second place in the NFC West with an 8-8 or 9-7 record. The Rams will barely lose out to the Philadelphia Eagles for the wildcard.
I don’t know if I can even say how rosy these are. It is surpising for me and hope springs eternal for me every preseason.
Football Outsiders has just predicted a better result that I could even expect in my wildest dreams. And that’s wild. I love the NFL.
