Predicting the Rams Record

Last year at this time, I took my rose-colored glasses and fixed them to my face and took a look at how many games I thought the Rams would win. (My prediction of 9-7 was spectacularly false.) So, I’m going to get back on the horse and try again this year.

Keep in mind that these picks are from an non-insider Rams blog site editor and I reserve the right to change my mind or be completely wrong.

Follow the yellow brick road, after the jump!

Week 1  @ SEA – The Rams are starting off the season in the house of horrors for them, Qwest Field.  But, the Seahawks are hobbled and aging.  This will be Matt Hasselback’s first regular season game since he lost most of 2008.  The newer resilient Rams won’t fold under the crowd noise.    Win

Week 2 @ WAS – The Rams squeaked out a victory at Washington last year and they won’t be taken for granted by the Redskins again.  Loss

Week 3 GB – The Rams will play Green Bay in the dome, but it will feel like an away game with all the travelling Packers fans.  The Pack are improving team with an ascendant quarterback and a young, hungry defense.  Loss

Week 4 @ SF – The Rams haven’t had much success in Candlestick Whatever Park or anywhere lately.  Both teams are hard-working teams with flaws.  I like the Rams passing game to carry them here.  Win

Week 5 MIN – The Vikings are sporting their own Brett Favre talisman this season, but will rely on the talents of Adrian Peterson and Favre’s purple #4 jersey won’t even need to get dirty. Loss

Week 6 @ JAC – Jacksonville is an odd team as they seem to be able to either be good or terrible every year.  Torry Holt will have a great game against his old mates, but it will not be enough.  Win

Week 7 IND – The Colts are a team that will always be a threat when Peyton Manning is behind center.  The Rams will lose this one in a high-scoring game. Loss

Week 8 @ DET – Detriot was the only team that had a worse record than the Rams in 2008.  They are starting a rookie QB and still have holes in a lot of areas.  Win

Week 10 NO – Drew Brees and Company have a dynamic offense and should get enough defense to stop the Rams. Loss

Week 11 ARI – The flawed 2008 Rams had a chance to beat the Cardinals at home if it was not for a deflected pass that started a rout.  The Rams get some revenge on their bully. Win

Week 12 SEA – Seattle will have returned to health by week 12 or suffered more injuries.  2 of Seattle’s 4 wins in 2008 came against the Rams and in 2009 the Rams will return the favor. Win

Week 13 @ CHI – Cold and windy Chicago late in the season and Lovie Smith will have his defense flying around on the Rams.  Jay Cutler will be able to pick apart the Rams secondary. Loss

Week 14 @ TEN – The Titans are a powerhouse running team and will run all over the Rams defensive front seven with some crushing completions from Kerry Collins. Loss

Week 15 HOU – Houston is a team on the rise and every year it seems like this is the year that the Texans are going to make the playoffs.  It’s not going to be this year either.  Maybe next year.  Win

Week 16 @ ARI – Arizona plays great in their home stadium and will get revenge on the Rams for their victory earlier in the season. Loss

Week 17 SF – The Rams get a home game against the 9ers to close out the season and will have taken enough steps forward to put forth a concerted team effort at home.  There will be no 10 game losing streak to end the season this year. Win

Total: I’ve got the Rams at 8-8, a huge effort considering where they were a year ago.  It’s not as rosy as last year’s 9-7, but it does include some leaps of faith.  Say what you will about the Rams but at least it will be interesting to watch them in 2009.
