Revisiting the 2006 NFL Draft

With the Rams trading CB Tye Hill to the Atlanta Falcons for a 7th round draft pick and releasing TE Joe Klopfenstein, the Rams failed 2006 NFL draft come full into focus.

The Rams traded out of their initial position in the first round (11th overall) down to 15th overall.  For this exercise we will use the picks the Rams used rather than rescinding that trade.

Let’s put on our 20/20 hindsight goggles on and take a look at the Rams 2006 NFL draft and what could have been.

1st round – 15th overall – Rams picked CB Tye Hill out of Clemson.

The Rams could have selected CB Antonio Cromartie out of Florida State who was selected 4 picks later.  Cromartie has had one great year and one not as good year in his two seasons in the NFL.  He made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season and his combination of size and speed should have had the Rams talking.

2nd round – 46th overall – Rams picked TE Joe Klopfenstein out of Colorado

The Rams could have selected TE Tony Scheffler out of Western Michigan who was selected 15 picks later and is the starting TE for the Denver Broncos.

3rd round – 68th overall – Rams picked DT Claude Wroten out of LSU

The Rams could have selected DT Dusty Dvoracek out of Oklahoma.  Dvoracek has had a injury prone career so far, but he is strong at the point of attack when he is in the game.

3rd round – 77th overall – Rams selected LB Jon Alston out of Stanford

The Rams could have selected RB Jerious Norwood out of Mississippi State.  I’m forgoing the same position picks here as the Rams still have a need for a homerun hitting backup running back like Norwood.

3rd round – 93 overall – Rams selected TE Dominic Byrd out of USC

The Rams could have selected TE Owen Daniels out of Wisconsin.  Daniels is currently the starting TE for the Houston Texans.

4th round – 113 overall – Rams select DE Victor Adeyanju out of Indiana

The Rams will keep this selection as Adeyanju has given the Rams good value for his selection.

5th round – 144 overall – Rams selected WR Marques Hagans out of Virgina

The Rams could have selected SS Dawan Landry, a hard hitting safety out of Georgia Tech who fit right in with the Baltimore Ravens defense and earned a starting spot in his rookie year.

7th round – 221 overall – Rams selected LB Tim McGarigle out of Northwestern

Tim McGarigle didn’t last more than 1 year on the Rams roster and there isn’t much to chose from in the 7th round but QB DJ Shockley out of Georgia is currently the 3rd QB on the Atlanta Falcons roster.

7th round – 242 overall – Rams selected G Mark Setterstrom out of Minnesota

The very rare nail on the head selection for the Rams.  Setterstrom has been great when not injured and a valuable depth lineman.

7th round – 243 overall – Rams selected G Tony Palmer out of Missouri

The Rams could have selected WR Marques Colston out of Hofstra.  He had some character questions in the draft, but has been nothing but an outstatnding player for the New Orleans Saints in his short career.

To recap, the Rams could have had:

CB Antonio Cromartie

TE Tony Scheffler

DT Dusty Dvoracek

RB Jerious Norwood

TE Owen Daniels

DE Victor Adeyanju

SS Dawan Landry

QB DJ Shockley

G Mark Setterstrom

WR Marques Colston

That’s quite a haul from a draft.

The 2006 draft was disastrous for the St. Louis Rams and if I time-travelled back from 2009 to run the Rams draft room, this is who I would pick.
