Rams Game Day – What to Watch

The St. Louis Rams are facing off with the Cincinnati Bengals in the 3rd preseason game in what ammounts to as close of a dress rehersal as there is in the preseason.  So, put on your regular season gear and let’s figure out what to watch.

1. Backup Running Back – The Rams backup running back situation is as fluid as ever with Darby, Pittman and Gado switching rankings daily.  Who will get to play with the 1st team?  Gado didn’t do much with his chance last week and Darby didn’t do much with his chance the week before.  Is it Pittman’s chance?  We will get an extended look at all the running backs as Steven Jackson may only have a handful of runs.

2. Berlin v. Null – These two guys are battling for the 3rd QB spot on the roster.  Null has a big advantage because of his youth.  However, Berlin has been playing the 3rd quarter with the 2nd string and Null the 4th quarter with the 3rd string.  Is Null going to get in the game before Brock Berlin?  Both guys have TD passes and the battle may go down to the wire on September 5th.

3. Cornerback #2 – No one has stepped up to take the reins opposite Ron Bartell.  Tye Hill has been starting, but has struggled a little (which is a step up from 2008).  He got victimized by Tony Gonzalez last week, but the list of guys who have got beaten by the veteran TE is long.

4. Laurent Robinson – Robinson has had a breakout preseason so far.  Can he keep it up?

5. The rest of the WRs – Who is going to step up to take the slot WR position?  Keenan Burton will have the first crack at it as he is starting in place of Donnie Avery, but don’t count out veteran Ron Curry or speedster Derek Stanley.

6. Defensive Line – Can the defensive line get pressure on Cincy’s QB and stop the run at the point of attack?  The Rams were good against the Jets, but bad against the Falcons.  Stopping the run will go a long way towards having a good season in 2009.

Anything else to watch for?
