Last Minute Thoughts: Rams vs Bengals

Not really relevant to tonight, but it occurs to me that (careerwise) Marc Bulger and Carson Palmer are pretty comparable QBs. Both have several Pro Bowl selections (Bulger 3, Palmer 2), both have QB’d for teams that haven’t had a winning season in a number of years (Rams 2003, Bengals 2005), and both are fairly injury prone. Both are exciting QBs whose performances have not really amounted to that much. In the regular season both need to stay healthy and lead their teams. Both of their coaches need to be smart and set them up for success.

Tonight, we have 2 teams coming off of terrible seasons. Two teams who are trying to recreate themselves. Here are a few cumulative preseason stats for both:

Stat Rams Bengals

First Downs 32 28

FDs (Pass-Rush-Pent) 13 – 19 – 0 10 – 17 – 1

3rd Down Conversions 6/25 13/30

Total Offense 589 725

Rushing 272 263

Passing 317 462

Sacks 4 4

Field Goals 5/5 0/1

TDs 3 2

Turnover Ratio +3 -1

It’s hard to make a meaningful call on this one since both starting QBs are out tonight. Both teams have primarily relied on the passing game to achieve first downs so it will be interesting to see if this trend will continue and which back up QBs will step up. If the Rams can improve their 3rd down conversion percentage and keep a positive turn over ratio, I am calling this one for the Rams. But, as I have been saying, the most important thing in these pre-season games is to continue to improve the execution of fundamental team play.
