Laurent Robinson – Player to Watch

Among all the injuries the Rams have had in their wide receiver corps so far in training camp and the preseason, Laurent Robinson has been a staple at WR2.  He has shown the size, speed and strength that has made the Rams coaches happy so far in the preaseason.

He has shown the abililty to use his quick first step and get inside of corner backs for the quick slant.  He uses his 6 foot 2 inch frame to shield the corner and make the catch.  The short slant is a bread and butter play for the West Coast offense and Robinson has shown the ability to execute the play perfectly.

He has leaped up and over defenders to catch a high pass across the middle of the field.  The Rams receivers are all on the shorter side with 5-11 Donnie Avery and 6-0 Keenan Burton.  Newly-aquired and rarely featured Ronald Curry is the only receiver who is signifiantly larger than Robinson.  Having a jump-ball weapon in the red zone will significantly increase the plays that Rams can call in the red zone.  When was the last time the Rams successfully completed a fade pattern in the end zone?

Robinson has also shown the speed which is the 3rd part of his game.  In the Jets preseason game he got behind his man to make a great catch on a 50 yard pass from Marc Bulger.  Robinson beat his man off the line and ran a “go” route straight up the field.  Avery will be the speed option most of the time in 2009 for the St. Louis Rams, but having a second option allows the Rams coaching staff to put in the type of wrinkles that confuse the opposing defense.

So far, so good for Laurent Robinson, who has shown that he has the ability to play a very good wide receiver position.  The Associated Press checks in with Robinson who shows he has the determination to prove his Atlanta doubters wrong and step into the starting WR2 position.  He also got written up by St. Louis Rams official blogger Nick Wagoner.

  1. Fantasy draft sleeper? I’m targeting him in about the 12th round.

    • Jeff Roman says:

Absolutely a sleeper, he’s not even listed in a 14 round ADP draft. If you are the only round, you could take him even lower.

I would hope that he would have even more value if you used keepers.
