Rams Report Card: (Pre-Season Game 1) Rams vs Jets

Rams Jets Football
In last week’s article “Rams 2009 Pre-Season Opener” I emphasized execution of the basics:

Can the offensive line protect Bulger in the pocket? Are they able to get out in front of Steven Jackson and set some blocks? How crisp and fast is Jackson (I’ve heard very little about him coming out of training camp)? Can Bulger keep his cool, make a few completions, and not turn the ball over? On the defensive said, again just the basics. Are Butler and Atogwe keeping up with the Jets?

REPORT CARD

Offensive Line: (First string) C+ The O-Line looked pretty good opening up some running lanes, but Bulger was sacked 3 times.

Running Backs: B+
Ogbonnaya got most of the work, but Jackson looked pretty good and Gado made the amazing 77 yard touch down run.

Quarterbacks: C
I’ll give Bulger (and the rest of the Ram’s QBs) credit for not throwing any interceptions, but overall there was little offense generated from passing (31st in the league). Props to Null for a great TD pass and to Boller for a great blocking attempt in the 2nd quarter.

Receiving Core: B+ Youngsters Robinson, McMichael and Walker had a good night. I was pleasantly surprised.

Defensive Line: B The D-Line recorded two sacks and played some tough ball.

Corners/Safeties: D Sanchez picked all the passing lanes apart. The safeties got killed all night.

MVP: Josh Brown with 3 field goals

Overall Team Rating: B Let’s face it… we won. A lot of work needs to be done, but the Rams looked pretty good. Very good considering it was pre-season game #1.

Next week the Rams take on the Atlanta Falcons. Take away Gado’s 77 yard touch down run and the Rams and the Falcons had very comparable week #1 stats. With Bulger out for the next 2 weeks it will be exciting to see who steps up. Boller showed a lot of heart this past week. Another good showing and I could find myself becoming a fan. Let’s look for improvements upon week 1 deficiencies and continued growth in fundamental execution.
