And So it Begins

With the preseason beginning this week, we are about to see glimpses of just what this team is capable of. This week unfortunately had bad news, as Adam Carriker (2 Weeks), Donnie Avery (4-6 Weeks) and Eric Bassey (Season) were all injured. Avery is a big blow, especially considering that he will miss all of the preseason most likely, and possibly a little more.

With that in mind, Derek Stanley, Keenan Burton, and just about any other wide receiver now have excellent chances to show what they can do since Avery is out. After Burton, Robinson and Avery, their was a mash up of names in the mix for the other spots, and with Avery out, somebody will have to fill it. We will see what happens this Friday, but I would hope that the young WR’s seize any and every opportunity they have to improve.

Quincy Butler continues to impress me, from all the reports I hear. I think he has a legitimate shot at seeing some time on the field this season, and is most likely a shoe-in now to make the team. From everything I have been hearing, the defense looks to be shaping up. The defensive line looks to be performing better and so does the secondary.

The secondary in particular is exciting to hear about. A real competition is brewing, as Justin King and Bradley Fletcher could push Tye Hill for the other spot across from Bartell.

As far as linebacking goes, Chris Draft is also impressing. Jeff Gordon from STLToday.com notes that he has a real chance to start, and I really agree with that. He has impressed the coaches with his play, and he did a good job at the scrimmage.

I’m starting to get excited about this season, mainly because we get to see what this team can really do once someone lights a fire beneath them. Who knows what can happen in the NFL. A one year turn around would probably shock me, but it doesn’t mean it cannot happen.

One last note: The Rams brought in recently released Shaun Smith for a physical, but no contract was offered.
