Rams Gab Position Preview – Strong Safeties

We are going to be previewing every position on the Rams here at the eve of training camp.  Now we are on to the defensive side of the ball.  Next up are the strong safeties.

James Butler

The Rams signed James Butler as a free agent this offseason from the New York Giants to solidify their strong safety position after Corey Chavous manned the spot for the last 3 years.  Chavous was aging and no longer capable of making the tackles he used to in his younger days.  The Rams upgraded the position with Butler.  He is a solid all-around strong safety who should let Rams fans quickly forget the Corey Chavous era.

Todd Johnson

Johnson filled in for Chavous after he was benched half way through the 2008 season.  Johnson was better than Chavous, but still has holes in his game.  He is much better playing close to the line of scrimmage and struggles in space.  He is a great special team contributor and should make the Rams roster again in 2009 as a backup and special teams ace.
