Rams Gab Position Preview – Free Safeties

We are going to be previewing every position on the Rams here at the eve of training camp.  Now we are on to the defensive side of the ball.  Next up are the free safeties.

OJ Atogwe

Atogwe is the Rams franchise player and he is playing under the franchise tender for the season.  He has not yet agreed to a long-term extension and the Rams will not be able to sign him to a long term extension until after the season.  OJ is one of the Rams cornerstones on defense.  He struggles in stopping the running game, but with a better front seven, no running backs will be bearing down on him.  The best term for Atogwe’s play at free safety is “ball-hawking” as he usually leads the team in interceptions and forced fumbles.  He is a stalwart on the Rams defense and hopefully the Rams can get him locked up long term.

The next three free safeties are after the jump!

Eric Bassey

Bassey has bounced from the practice squad to the active roster for the Rams over the past two years and has been a standout on special teams both years.  If he will make the team in 2009, it will be on special teams.  He has 25 special teams tackles in 18 games, so he does have some value there.

David Roach

Roach was on the Rams practice squad last year and although he was moved to the active roster at the end of the season, he did not get into uniform for either of the last two games.  Scouts Inc had this to say about Roach when he was coming out of TCU.  “…lacks elite agility and he’s too inconsistent for a player with his experience but there’s a lot to like about his upside. He’s got the frame to develop into an effective in-the-box safety, the range to excel in zone coverage and the tools to develop into a valuable special teams’ contributor.”

Craig Dahl

The Rams signed Dahl as a free agent this offseason from the New York Giants so Coach Spagnuolo is very familiar with what Dahl can do for the Rams.  He should have the advantage that he already knows the defense that Coach is installing.  He did start twice for the New York Giants, so Spagnuolo must have seen enough of Dahl to get him signed for the Rams.
