Rams Gab Position Preview – Tight Ends

We are going to be previewing every position on the Rams here at the eve of training camp.  Next up are the tight ends.

Randy McMichael

Randy McMichael is a solid tight end in the league and should be a valuable asset to Marc Bulger in 2009 in the Midwest Offense.  He was hurt most of 2008 and was not a featured part of the offense when he was on the field.  McMichael was a good teammate throughout even though he had a frustrating year.  Look for him to get more passes and bounce back in 2009.

Rest of the tight ends are after the jump!

Daniel Fells

Fells is an interesting character because he was picked up by Billy Devaney off of Tampa Bay’s practice squad.  He is an athletic, pass catching tight end who has shown signs of life in the lost 2008.  He should be a valuable down the field threat for the Rams going forward.

Joe Klopfenstein

What to do about, Joe?  The former 2nd round pick has underacheived in his young NFL career.  He has dropped passes, got steamrolled for sacks and has generally struggled.  His roster spot is in serious jepordy this year as Randy McMichael is the starter, Daniel Fells is the pass catching specialist and Billy Bajema was brought into the team to be a blocking specialist.  Klop is the classic case of jack of all trades, master of none.  In the NFL, unless you have some outstanding skills, you will get run over.  And Joe has gotten run over so far.

Billy Bajema

Billy Bajema was brought over from San Francisco to be a blocking specialist at the point of attack.  He will come in with two TE running situations, goal line, and will spell McMichael when Fells is not needed.  He should not catch too many passes on the year, but look for him to be a valuable, albeit quiet member of the Rams squad.

Eric Butler

Eric Butler is a first year player and undrafted free agent in 2008 out of Mississippi State.  He seems to be a training camp body and a candidate for the practice squad.
