Rams Gab Position Preview – Centers

We are going to be previewing every position on the Rams here at the eve of training camp.  Next up are the centers.

Jason Brown

Brown was a huge addition for the St. Louis Rams as they have dealt with undersized and overwhelmed centers over the past two years.  The Rams had to overpay for Brown, paying him as an elite guard, which is considerably more than an elite center.  However, I don’t think you will find anyone that does not think that it is worth every penny to solidify the Rams offensive line up the middle.
Brown has the combination of size, strength and quickness to keep the defensive tackles of the NFC West off of Marc Bulger.

The rest of the centers are after the jump.

Daniel Sanders

Daniel Sanders was signed by the Rams as a rookie free agent after the 2009 NFL Draft out of University of Colorado.  He started all 12 games at Center in his senior year for the Buffaloes.  He allowed only one sack all year.
Daniel Sanders is an experienced college center and will provide solid depth with room to improve in the future.

Tim Mattran

Mattran signed as a reserve player after spending the end of the 2008 season on the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sports Illustrated’s  pre-2008 draft scouting report has him as a center with good size, good technique and intelligence (he went to Stanford) who struggled with injuries in his college career.  SI thinks that if he stays healthy, he has the ability to grow into a NFL-quality center.  He should spend 2009 on the Rams practice squad.
