Do The Rams Have Until This Afternoon to Sign OJ?

Do the Rams have until this afternoon to sign OJ Atogwe to a long-term deal?

Profootballtalk.com says, yes here and here.

But, Kevin Demoff thinks there’s a good chance OJ will sign before this afternoon’s deadline.

“We’ve been talking with O.J. since January,” Demoff said. “We value O.J. as a player, and we understand where the market is. … We’re not there on a long-term deal yet, but we could be there by Wednesday.”

However, if OJ does not ink a long-term deal by this afternoon, negotiations can still continue.  But, OJ would not be eligible to officially sign a contract until after the season.  The Rams would have to get him to sign a deal between the end of the season and the beginning of free agency.  That is the period when teams have “exclusive negotiating rights”.  We all know that other teams tamper away with other team’s players before free agency, so it is less than exclusive.  This is a risk the Rams do not want or need to take with one of the pillars of their defense.

Just sign OJ to a long-term deal before 4pm Eastern today.
