With the 35th Selection in the 2009 Draft

The St. Louis Rams select James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State. I’m torn right now between him and Rey Maualuga, but I think Laurinaitis is a great choice for the Rams. If everyone passed on Maualuga, there must be something we don’t know. I trust Devaney and his decision making, so I’m going with him in thinking that Laurinaitis will be an very good MLB for the Rams.

Without further ado, let’s get into the analysis of the pick. NFL.com says that he has excellent size and athleticism for an inside linebacker, and that he is always ready to make a play when it happens. He reacts well and has enough speed to get to the point of attack, and it should be noted that the skill that stands out the most is that he is very good at open-field tackling, something that should help the Rams from giving up gargantuan running plays every game. They also say he has the ability to drop back into coverage, which can make him very versatile in the linebacking unit. As far as coverage, he has soft enough hands to be able to pick up the interception, which should make it a little harder to throw up the middle.

On the flipside, he needs to add strength. That isn’t something that should be a huge issue, since I’m sure the Rams will help him add strength to his upper body. He’s also not much of a blitzer, but I don’t think that is going to be as much of an issue since the ‘spoon is moving to the outside.

With a little coaching and training, I think he can turn into a solid MLB that can contribute to the Rams early on in 2009, and quite possibly could start this season.
