Billy Devaney: A Man of the People

Rams GM Billy Devaney was nice enough to have a chat with fans on Jim Thomas’ discussion this Tuesday, and just as excepted, stayed tight lipped about most of their draft plans. Besides some funny questions out there (including someone asking him to make an “astute, educated guess about who the Rams would pick at #2,” –like he’s going to divulge that), a lot of it was interesting to read.

RamsGab Editor Jeff Roman was lucky enough to get a question into Mr. Devaney (I wasn’t so lucky), asking him:Ram
“You are adding a lot of younger players with upside to the Rams squad, which is great. How do you and Coach Spagnuolo instill a winning mentality on a team with long term goals that may not make the playoffs in 2009 and hasn’t made the playoffs in years?”

To which Devaney answered:

“By making it clear to everyone that we are going to win here. I don’t know how long that’s going to take. We’re not discounting ’09. The goal is to win, and to win this year.”

That’s probably the answer everyone was hoping for, but a little over-analysis might lead to some clues about their drafting. If the goal is to win this year, then they are going to pick a player who can start, no questions asked.

As far as picking a player for need, don’t count on it, as he also said:

“Both players (Smith and Monroe) are considered the higest-graded prospects by many teams. If we took one of the tackles at No. 2, it would be because we deem them the best player.”

I think it’s safe to say that if the Rams think Aaron Curry is rated higher than either of those tackles, he is going to be the pick. As far as WR Michael Crabtree, the Rams were reportedly turned off by his attitude and his personality.

Perhaps though the most interest quote from the man who says he is “bad with smokescreens” is this:

“It depends on who the OT is, and where we draft him. By the way, Alex looks really good at left tackle right now.”- Billy Devaney on drafting a tackle at #2.

Come Saturday, we will see what he means.
