Dark Horse: Michael Crabtree

Texas Tech Crabtree Football
While his injury seems to have dropped his atmospheric status in the draft (which is quickly approaching), could he still be a dark horse for the Rams at the #2 spot? Conventional wisdom would frown against this choice, with so many needs on both sides of the ball. Taking a young player so early to add to another bunch of young players just doesn’t make sense. Or does it?

Anthony Hall of NFL Outsider has this to say about the matter:

“The Rams are lacking a true number one wideout with Torry Holt gone – Donny Avery is probably not able to carry a receiving corps

While we all have high hopes for Avery and his young comrades Burton, Robinson and Stanley, that statement seems pretty true, at least for 2009. The more I look at it, the more the Rams seem to be thin at Wide Receiver. But would taking Crabtree be worth it? A look at his accomplishments would help us understand if he really is worth grabbing. In College, he was selected as a unanimous All-American twice, in addition to two unanimous Biletnikoff awards (given to the nation’s best receiver). He’s been most often compared to Randy Moss, foot injury or not. Regardless, a player of his caliber doesn’t come around too often.

But would this mean for Rams draft plans, and for the 2009 season? Well, first off, why would you close the only practice you have before the draft to the press? It’s ridiculous according many of the local St. Louis reporters. But could it really just be a smokescreen? Remember, John Greco was originally a RT, and was selected post-Devaney. The Rams seemed so high on him last year, and with Alex Barron so far the starting LT, could it be Greco’s year to win the other side?

There is no doubt that Aaron Curry, Eugene Monroe, or even Jason Smith would be excellent choices for the Rams. But if you had the chance to grab the next Randy Moss, would you?
