What If The Lions Pass?

Profootballtalk.com explores this exact sequence of events today as the rumor mill has the Lions pondering passing on their pick to save money on who they will eventually draft as they feel that none of the players is a standout number 1 overall selection.

Needless to say, there would be a lot of confusion in the draft rooms and on TV around the country.  Similar to when the Vikings passed on their pick in 2003 and moved down a few spots.  It is obviously unprecedentedfor the team with the number 1 overall selection to pass, but it was also unprecedented for a team to go 0-16 and that’s exactly what the Lions did.

But, how does this effect our hometown Rams?  At the point when the 15 minutes runs out, the Rams will get their selection in as soon as possible.  The Rams will get their selection of Curry (Rams Gab endorsed), Monroe or Smith.  However, the Rams will also get their selection of these three players if the Lions select Matt Stafford at #1 because the Rams have very little interest in Stafford.  If the Lions pass, the Rams selection will argue that he should be paid #1 overall money as well, so the negotiations could get very difficult for the Rams brass.

So, in conclusion, the best case scenario for Rams fans is the Lions selecting Matt Stafford.  The second best case scenario is the Lions passing on their pick, but it would offer some complications for the Rams.  Interesting scenario, but very unlikely to happen.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rams trade out of that #2 spot, regardless of what the Lions do. I know how important the tackle spot is, and there are some good ones at the top end of this draft. But the Rams are rebuilding. Drop down to the 8-12 spot. You’re still going to get an excellent player, plus you’ll have some extra picks, not to mention the impact this would have on the payroll. IMHO.
