Rams Trade For Laurent Robinson. Who Is Laurent Robinson?

The Rams attempted to fill in their depth issues at receiver by trading for Laurent Robinson from Atlanta for draft pick swaps in the 5th and 6th round.

Laurent Robinson is a speedy wide receiver out of Illinois State.  He ran a 4.38 40 yard dash in the workouts leading up to the 2007 draft.  He also possesses great run after the catch skills, which will come in handy with the new West Coast Offense. He’s got good size, at 6-2 to challenge NFC West corners.

But, why did the Atlanta Falcons part with him for so little?  He seemingly fell into the doghouse with the new Atlanta staff in 2008 and only played in about half the games.  The Atlanta staff had wide receivers they liked more than Robinson and he was expendable.

Rams GM Billy Devaney was working as an assistant GM for Atlanta during the 2007 draft and must have remembered seeing something in Robinson that he liked.  Robinson will compete with Keenan Burton (and any 2009 WR draft picks) for the starting slot opposite Donnie Avery.  Robinson was never able to gain any consistency with Atlanta and after two years in the league is still a rough gem.  Robinson has a chance to be a huge boom for the Rams and is a known quantity by Billy Devaney and cost very little.  This is a great move for the Rams and the type of move that Devaney excels at.  If the Rams give Robinson consistent playing time, he will have a great chance to develop into a star wide receiver.

Update: 4/7 – From the looks of it, his number will fit nicely into the “Teen Squad”.
