The Rams resigned starting CB Ron Bartell on Monday and they now have another CB vacancy to fill.

At the same time, rumors have been circling that Antonio Cromartie is on the block in San Diego after a dissapointing 2008.  And I think the Rams should be interested.

The going market for CBs on the trade market was set by Lito Sheppard to the Jets at a 2nd round pick and a conditional pick depending on performance.  I don’t think the Rams should consider trading their 2nd round pick as it is quite a bit different than the Jets 2nd round pick.  The Rams are picking 2nd in the second round and the Jets were picking 17th.  If Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel only collect the 3rd pick in the second round, Cromartie should not be in the range of the 2nd pick.

The Rams could start their discussions with a 3rd round pick this year and possibly a conditional 3rd round for 2010.  I mean “conditional” in that based on performance the pick could be a second round next year or could be a 3rd or 4th.  That package is similar enough to what got Lito Sheppard from Philadelphia to New York.

Would the Chargers bite?  I think they would if in fact Cromartie is on the block or is going to be on the block.

UPDATE: This is all moot now as Chargers GM A.J. Smith debunks the rumor by saying that Cromartie is not being traded. (According to The National Football Post.)  It was good to dream for a little however.
