Scouting Report – Michael Oher

Michael Oher is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a offensive tackle prospect.

Mocking the Draft has a fantastic scouting report on Oher up from a few days ago.

Also, College Scout has a great summary of the issue with Oher and why he has fluxuated from top 5 overall pick to the end of the first round.

Oher is a frustrating prospect to scout. I’m not commenting about his off-field work habits, but on the field he often does just enough to complete his assignment despite his talent to dominate his opponent every play. He does, however, finish his assignments. If he used his legs more as a run-blocker he’d be excellent in that role, but as it is he is acceptable in a scheme that doesn’t ask OL to blow their guy off the ball (ideally a zone scheme would suit him well). Oher will have to prove that he can mentally grasp the game, and while he does make a few mistakes, it was actually fewer than I expected and not an overwhelming problem. There is no way I would draft Oher without interviewing him extensively, but if he checks out (and I think he will) as intelligent enough to play in the NFL, he is physically gifted enough to be a franchise LT for the right team.

Michael Oher has the gift to be a left tackle in the National Football League, but it seems that Oher needs the right fit to suceed.  He needs a pass-happy offense with a coach that can inspire Oher to finish his blocks and use his physical tools to fullfill his epic potential.  Are the Rams the right team?  I don’t know.  But, with the change to the “west coast” offense and the focus on the running game, maybe Oher is not the pick.
