Per Chris Mortensen of ESPN on Saturday’s edition of Sunday NFL Countdown, former Giants coach Jim Fassel had a “terrific” interview for the vacant head-coaching job in St. Louis.

Though Fassel is still likely a long shot for the job, the news could help him get back into the game, even if the opportunity comes in Canada.

Fassel coached the Giants from 1997 through 2003, leading the team to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXV, which they lost to the Ravens.

After getting fired, Fassel went to work for the Ravens. He was sufficiently confident of his chances of getting another head-coaching job that he went in only as a “consultant,” so that he could interview and/or leave for another opportunity if the Ravens made it to the postseason.

Eventually, Fassel became the offensive coordinator — and he was abruptly fired midway through the 2006 season.

Since then, Fassel has gotten no sniffs, until now. His efforts to regain employment reportedly included writing a letter to Raiders owner Al Davis, something that Fassel later did not deny.
