On the 95% Number

So, the news came out in the past few weeks from the as usual infamous “unnamed veteran source” that 95% of the Rams players want Jim Haslett to be back as head coach in 2009.  NINETY-FIVE PERCENT?!?!?!  That makes no sense to me at first glance.   But, then I began to think about it a little bit and it began to make more sense.

95% of the Rams players want Jim Haslett back as head coach even though he has struggled as defensive coordinator and interim head coach because they themselves have struggled.  The players are projecting their underacheiving on Haslett.  If Haslett comes back, then there is hope for them to keep their jobs even though 95% of the Rams players have not played up to the best of their ability. Additionally, on the defensive side of the ball, Jim Haslett picked most if not all of the players and Haslett could vouch for the old players with new GM Billy Devaney.

Under Jim Haslett, the Rams players know that they could continue to lose and give middling effort and Jim Haslett would vouch for them as he has done over the past three years.

Under a completely new regime, the Rams players would not know what to expect.  Under a new regime, the Rams will make over the roster with more talented and dedicated players.  This means that most of the current Rams players will be out.

So, when we look at it in that fashion, 95% of the Rams players want to keep a coach who has backed them even though they have both struggled, so that the odds that they will keep their jobs are increased.  The 95% has very little to do with Jim Haslett’s coaching ability, and more to do with the players wanting to save their own jobs after a terrible season.

I vote for bringing in a new coach and keeping the players that deserve it based on their play on the field and getting rid of the players who do not.
