Billy Devaney – A Man With A Plan

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch had a sit-down with Billy Devaney, the man who holds the key to the future of the St. Louis Rams.  Devaney will oversee free agency, the draft and the new head coaching search.  That is quite a task, but Billy is saying all the right things.  Let’s break it down as I love to do.  Bernie and Billy are in bold because I like alliterations.

“Beef up the scouting department. He believes the Rams have a good staff of college scouts. But he’d like to see more manpower dedicated to the pro personnel department. “

This is a no-brainer, especially since the Rams infamously outsourced their pro scouting over the past years, which ended with the hire of Devaney.

“Beef up the roster. “The team needs to get bigger, physically,” Devaney said.”

Another no-brainer after watching the Rams get pushed around on both sides of the ball for the last three years, the Rams need to become the pushers.  That leads into…

“Improving the offensive line is a top priority” and “Construct a strong defensive middle: “We need to bring in some bigger pieces for the defensive line”

The game of football in the NFL is won on the both lines of scrimmage.  If you can dominate both lines, you will win more than you lose and I’m glad Devaney is building the team around this philosophy.  So, that means goodbye to undersized DT Laroi Glover.  Thanks for the memories of your high waisted pants.   I’m convinced to this day that they make them special for you.  Devaney also mentions that Will Witherspoon will make his move to the outside permanent and the Rams will find a big MLB to plug the holes.  This will allow Witherspoon to use his athleticism to chase QBs and RBs.  So, now I’ll throw out two names here as I day dream about future Rams: Andre Smith on the offensive line and Albert Haynesworth at DT.  I know the Rams will never been in the running for Haynesworth, who has become a free agent because of his selection to the Pro Bowl, but I can dream, right?

“Put a premium on finding character players. ” and “Develop a team personality, and reinforce it” and “Do not obsess over winning the sweepstakes for top-dollar free agents.”

Whoops, so much for Haynesworth!  However, This is exactly what the Rams should be doing.  St. Louis is not exactly a prime free agent destination even when the Rams do have the big dollars to spend on the top free agents.  The Rams have had problems with depth in previous years when they have been beset by injuries and Billy Devaney has done a great job picking players off other teams’ practice squads.  A whole year to turn over the roster will help Devaney provide the Rams with quality depth.

I like everything that Devaney is saying, I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
