Early Early Draft Update

Since the Rams are at this point playing for 2009 and the 2009 NFL Draft, let’s preview the NFL Draft top 5 at this point.  I’ve looked over four mocks and I’ll see if we can get some insight from them.  Here’s the four mock drafts I used: FootballsFuture.com , DraftTek.com , DraftCountdown.com and DraftKing.com.

If the season ended today, this would be the top 5 picks (according to NFL.com standings) and the player given to the team in the mock drafts (some are in different order).

1. Detroit Lions – Matt Stafford – QB – Georgia(2), Andre Smith – OT – Alabama, Michael Johnson – DE – Georgia Tech

2. Cincinati Bengals – Beanie Wells – RB – Ohio State(2), Malcolm Jenkins – CB – Ohio State, Michael Oher – OT – Ole Miss

3. St. Louis Rams – Eugene Monroe – OT – Virginia(2), Jenkins, Oher

4. Seattle Seahawks – Michael Crabtree – WR – Texas Tech(4)

5. Kansas City Chiefs – Stafford(2), Smith, Sam Bradford – QB – Oklahoma

So, where does that leave the St. Louis Rams?  I’m actually very surprised how high all these drafts had Eugene Monroe.  Three of the four drafts had the Rams taking an Offensive Tackle, which appears to be a very deep position in this draft.  Smith, Oher and Monroe are all looking like possible top 5 picks.  We here at Ramsgab.com will take a long look at all three offensive tackles to see who the Rams would prefer.  Andre Smith may be taken before the Rams pick, however, if the Lions take a QB and the Bengals takes Beanie Wells, the Rams may have a pick of offensive lineman.  That would be an ideal position for the Rams to be in.

The Rams can only hope that the QBs, WRs, RBs and CBs increase their draft stock in the weeks (months!) leading up to the draft to allow the player the Rams want to fall into their laps when they pick somewhere between pick 3 and 6.
