Football Outsiders Shows How Bad the Rams Have Been in 2008

Football Outsiders’ Aaron Schatz came out with the new DVOA Ratings for the year and he highlights here (or rather lowlights) the Rams in his rankings. According to Football Outsiders, they have been historically bad. I’ll quote Aaron to show just how bad it is for the Rams.

“Actually, what stands out after two weeks is not how good the Giants have been (or the Cowboys, or surprising Bills) but rather how bad the Rams have been. They’ve been monumentally, historically bad, only the second team since 1995 to have a VOA rating below -100% after Week 2. The other was the expansion Browns in 1999.”

So, according to the rankings, the Rams are as bad as an expansion team, in fact the worst expansion team of all time. To refine this further, the Rams been the second worst team in 18 years over the first two weeks. They were saved from being worst by an expansion team as well. That’s awful and it only gets worse as Aaron continues, However, there is only one team since 1995 that had two straight games with DVOA below -100%: The 2003 Arizona Cardinals, in Week 13 (28-3 loss to Chicago) and Week 14 (50-14 loss to San Francisco).”

Obviously DVOA is different than VOA (DVOA is adjusted for opponent) and the DVOA numbers are not in yet for the Rams in 2008, but Aaron is stating that the Rams could have the second worst two game stretch in the last 18 years.

So, as Aaron Schatz has shown, the Rams are bordering on being an infamously bad team. If we just pull out the information from his numbers, the Rams started the season as bad as any team in the past 10 years. We’ve gone over the fact that the Rams don’t have any answers here and they are saying that the defense is not as bad as they played. But, what about the offense?

Aaron adds insult to injury for Rams fans with his reason as to why his computational system did not compute the Week 2 numbers in time, “Why the crash? Because the Rams have not had a single play in the red zone yet this year.

That’s right: The Rams suck so bad that they broke our programs.” This is actually a stat that I did not hear too much from fans and the media regarding the troubles the Rams have had on offense. So, I’ll state it again. In two games, the Rams have not been inside the other team’s 20 yard line.

They have one touchdown on a long pass and all of the field goals were hit from outside of 37 yards. I think it is quite obvious to say, but to score in the NFL, you need to have the ball inside the 20 yard line. This is a major problem that I hope the offensive coaches are addressing as soon as possible.

And lastly, in just a few sentences, Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders has shattered any small hopes I had for this team in 2008. I hope that the players and coaches are right and they are better than they are showing…because Football Outsiders has shown us that what they are showing is historically bad football.
