Finally; Jackson and Rams Make Enough Progress for RB to Agree to Report

Jackson

The Rams have looked awful in two preseason games, but things may be a little more promising today as the team is about to get its number one running back into the fold.  After sitting out all of training camp and then some, the team has been informed that running back Steven Jackson is on his way back to the team, and will report tonight.

Jackson has one-year left on his rookie deal, and he wanted a new mega-deal before he would show up to camp, and now it looks like a new deal is close to happening.  ESPN reports that the Rams and Jackson’s agent, Eugene Parker, have been holding preliminary conversations, positive enough to motivate Jackson to report.

The Rams have been fining Jackson $15,000 per day for missing camp while being under contract, but by the time he signs that new deal, that money will seem like chump change. He is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004.  “This is certainly a step in the right direction,” coach Scott Linehan said. “We’re hoping we can get this thing squared away real quickly.”

In four seasons with the Rams, Jackson has rushed for 4249 yards and 30 touchdowns.  He ran for 1002 yards last season, his third straight 1,000+ yard season, despite missing four games with injuries.  The season before he rushed for 1528 yards and 13 touchdowns.
