The Loe Down on a Few Things Rams

What to look for during Rams Chargers

I guess I should preface that by saying that I mean look in a figurative sense, the Rams pre-season home opener is blacked out, so unless you want to wait for the taped version, you are out of luck. So while listening to Rams Chargers on the radio, here are a few things that you should give attention to.

The last days of the wide receiver battle:

Another strong showing by Dane Looker could put an end to the uncertainty surrounding who will be the Rams 6th wide out. Looker looked great against the Titans, and another performance like that will lock him up as a member of the 2008 rams. If that is the case then that most likely means the end of the road for Derek Stanly, so also pay attention to who else may be returning kicks tomorrow. It would be prudent to give some of the young players a chance; given that Dante Hall has an injury history.

Just how Key is Will Witherspoon to the Rams Defense?

Saturday marks the first live game action for Rams Mike Linebacker Will Witherspoon. Given that with out him the Rams defense was carved up like a turkey, it will be interesting to see if his presence marks a significant improvement. The Chargers go deep at tail back, with a stable full of guys that can do damage on the ground, so this should be a good early test to see if the Rams failure against Tennessee was the result of the usual problems of an opening game.

Can the Offense gain rhythm?

Last pre-season, we saw the Rams Offense fail to ever click. While I agree with the argument that we don’t want to see established players hurt in the pre-season, I still feel that the Rams starting Offensive unit should have played farther into last weekends contest. This weekend they should not be pulled until they gain some kind of traction.

A few thoughts:

Steven Jackson needs to get his stuff together and get practicing. There is talk that he may be looking for yet another new agent, and if this is in fact the case, his availability for the season opener becomes clouded.

I bought my version of NFL Field pass last night so that I can listen to Rams games on the radio at school. One part of the pass is access to archives of past broadcasts. I listened to the Rams 2004 17 point comeback against Seattle. Those were the days, Jack Snow did color.

If the Rams hope to improve on the atmosphere at home games, it is going to take more than gimmicks to do it. There was a post dispatch article detailing the new features of Rams home games, including a drum line called the “Battering Rams” Sorry folks, but if the team wants a fired up crowd they had better show something between the lines to warrant it. They have a lot of selling to do, and it starts this weekend pre-season or not.
