Offensive Line Depth has Never Been So Cool

While we are in the doldrums of the NFL offseason the only thing to talk about is the small pool of free agents available to sign. June 1st used to bring a bounty of overpriced veterans into the free agent market, but the last few years have been different. Teams are being more careful with their cap space and keeping their most important players.

This year we are presented with the LeCharles Bentley situation. LeCharles asked for and received his release last week from the Cleveland Browns after a two seasons and zero games played. Bentley was injured for both seasons in Cleveland, first with a knee injury and then with a nasty staph infection. Now, he is by all accounts healthy and a free agent.

Should the Rams sign this guy? I am going to say yes. The Center position is the weakest on the Rams Offensive Line. The Rams have several good options fighting for the Center job in Incognito, Romberg, Setterstrom and Fry, but no Pro Bowlers. LeCharles was an All-Pro with the New Orleans Saints and after being out for two years, might be a little rusty, but should be able to regain his Pro Bowl form.

His agent said that ten teams have expressed interest in Bentley; rumors have the Vikings as front-runners for his services. Hopefully the Rams are one of the other nine teams.
