Barry Sims: Who is this guy?

For the last few days, Barry Sims has been touring around the NFL like he is Reggie White circa 1993. He has met with the Rams, Ravens, Patriots and 49ers. He is looking to both compete for a starting spot and play on a playoff team. First and foremost, only the Patriots are the only sure playoff team in that list. Can the Rams offer Barry a starting position on their offensive line? Let’s take a look.

Barry Sims took over for first round bust Robert Gallery at Left Tackle for Oakland in 2007 and started all 16 games. None the less, he was released in February. He’s 33 and looks to be angling for his last pro contract.

According to Football Outsiders stat pack (, Barry ranked middle of the pack for runs to the left tackle or left end. (League average is 4.05 Adjusted Line Yards for Left End and 4.35 ALY for Left Tackle.) For runs to the Left End, Barry (and the TE and other Offensive Line mates) recorded 3.71 ALY – which ranked 23rd in the league. Not very good. He also recorded 4.53 ALY on runs to the Left Tackle – which ranked 11th in the league.

Other stats notes: Oakland had one of the lowest Power Success rates at 55%. This means that Oakland only achieved 55% of their 3rd or 4th down runs with 2 yards or less to go. Oakland’s offense was dreadful and this isn’t all Barry’s fault, but it is something more to think about.

And so, the question becomes, do the Rams need Barry Sims? I would say no. The Rams added valuable and young Offensive Line depth through the draft with John Greco and Roy Schuening. Barry Sims looks to be a league average tackle. He would be nice to add for emergency depth, but not if he is sitting on the bench behind Barron and Pace as a malcontent. Let’s lets Sims go to one of the other teams in the running and develop our young Offensive Line.
